Post-treatment with Resveratrol Protects Against Neonatal Hypoxic-ischemic Brain Injury via Inhibit Inflammation and Apoptosis

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury is a devastating disease with limited treatment options. Resveratrol prevented-treatment has been indicated to be well tolerated and has lower toxicity in experimental models and human patients. However, it is not known if resveratrol administration post-HI protects sagainst neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.
Here we reported that post-treatment with resveratrol signi?cantly reduced brain damage at 7-day post-HI. We further demonstrated an inhibitory effect of resveratrol on neuroinflammation by reducing the expression of inflammatory factors at the mRNA and protein levels, and via inhibiting microglia activation. Moreover, resveratrol exerted an anti-apoptotic effect, as assessed by TUNEL staining, and altered the expression of the apoptosis-related genes Bax, Bcl-2 and cleaved caspase3.
In summary, this study indicates that post-treatment with resveratrol protects against neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and that this effect is related to its anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic activities.
Our data suggest that post-treatment with resveratrol might be a promising therapeutic method to effectively reduce neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
